So, I am Jewish, and Christmas Day is traditionally a day to do something fun.

It was one of the two days off I'll get this month, so I decided to continue my tradition of holding rather intense wine dinners. It started last year with a tasting of 1986 Haut Brion and Latour.

So this year I changed the crowd a little and changed the wines. This year we started with a Corton Renardes Grand Cru '98 from Girardin, a beautiful bottle of Pinot from Burgundy; with notes of Berries, leather, and mushrooms. Pleasantly earthy and great clean Pinot flavors.

Next up was a Smith Haut Lafite 1998, from Graves. This wine was the tightest of the bottles we opened, but still nice, though with a hint of green flavors. Good Cabernet based blend with nice tar and blackberries, good structure and grippy tannins. All in all a good bottle, and one that would have been very impressive on its own, but was followed by two amazing wines- so it did not show very well against them.

Next up was a bottle of 1996 Mouton Rothschild. Wow! This was great! Beautiful fruit up front followed by a great stucture and good secondary notes of leather and gamey-ness (iron). Impressive and strong and all in all amazing.

The final red wine of the day was the amazing, impressive 1989 Lafite Rothschild. This was just an astounding wine. It was my favorite of the night, with great flavors of light fruit, beautiful integrated lighter tannins, and amazing finish!

This round of tasting was followed by some amazing Philliponat Champagne from 1999 . . . very refreshing and clean fruit with nice flavors of earth and berries and a great mouthfeel and finish- just a perfect Champagne! Nice!

After this we got into eating a little more seriously, with great beef stew (at least, everyone else thought it was great) brought by Paul. Salad and Cheese from Shawn. Homeade foccacia and desserts that Eve and I made. Eve also made latkes - great! Finally, some sides and add ons from Paul and Rebecca, Shawn and Chris.

We rounded out the tasting after two rounds with some great Chiarlo Moscato D'Asti and Icewine, as well as a Ramos Pinto 1997 LBV Port.

All in all a great evening of wine and good food with great people and good conversations! Thanks to eveyrone who brought both food and wine for adding to our Christmas tradition!
