The wine article in today's Times is on Cotes du Rhone, which is a section for which I'm responsible.

Of the top ten selected by the tasting panel, I had just one in stock, the 2006 Eric Texier. I also carry both of the honorable mentions: 2006 Jaboulet Parallele 45 and the 2005 Brunel Cuvee Sabrine.I wasn't very disappointed in my taste, however. In several cases, we had a higher level wine from the same producer.

In every section, there are a limited number of spots, and I try to keep the section representative of the best wines of the region. While I could easily fill the section with food wines from a handful of producers (Guigal, Jaboulet and Chapoutier alone could fill the section), I try to choose wines from a number of top producers. Part of the selection process is to be sure I have wines from each of the major appellations in the region.

Thus, Chave's Cotes du Rhone is on the Times' list, but I carry the St. Joseph. The Coudoulet de Beaucastel is on the list, but I only have the Chateauneuf du Pape in the store. We even have a lower level wine from the Beaucastel people, the 2006 Perrin Reserve Cotes du Rhone. The panel liked the Clape Cotes du Rhone, but he is more famous for his Cornas, and that's what I have. These are outstanding wines in their own right, even better than the Cotes du Rhone, if more expensive.

Now, lots of people want the top rated wines from the panel, and I'm happy to oblige. Cases of the Domaine le Garrigon 2006 and the Domaine Gres St. Vincent 2006 will be arriving in the store either tomorrow or Friday.
