In my last post I wrote about a dinner I attended on Tuesday night, At this time I'd like to highlight the dessert wines we tasted at that dinner- the second of which was in my opinion the wine of the night, and was from my birth year! How cool is that?!? The first wine was the Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes from 1969. This amazing wine had a nice golden color, and was perhaps the first wine that made me understand the appeal of aged Sauternes, with its great color and nose of orange, candy, apricot and a hint of spice. This was was fruity and mouth-filling, but with balance and great acidity; the sugar is noticable, but not overpowering- just really a nice Sauternes.
The last wine of the evening was the 1975 Rieussec. This wine was quite amazing. With a great color of golden flowers, fading to slightly browner on the edges of the glass. The aroma was full of lemon, Vanilla, orange candy and tropical fruits, it was very complex and really intense. The full flavor and beauty comes on the palate; fully sugared, but still complex and oaky with lemon and candy, yet fully balanced by acidity and weight- just astounding. A great wine.
We have the 2004 of this in stock and for a very reasonable price- in fact, I am going to pick up a few to have around- perhaps when the are in their 30's they will be as good!
As always, enjoy the drink, and thanks for reading.
